How Does Java Reflection Api Work under the hood ?

Java Reflection is a process of examining or modifying the run time behavior of a class at run time.

I understand what java reflection Api is and what it does and how to apply that in code, I want to know how it does under the hood .Doesn't it break any oops concepts while doing so ?
