the getField() function gives a NoSuchFieldException when fields is public

The getFields() function only finds non-primitive fields and if I use the getField() function to find a primitive field I get a NoSuchFieldException, all of the fields are public so I can't understand why. I spent a few hours researching my problem and everyone says that I need to make my fields public, but they already are;
